Sexual Health Service FAQs
-
What is HIV?
HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. It attacks the immune system, specifically CD4 cells (T cells), which help the body fight infections. If untreated, HIV can lead to AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), a severe stage of the infection.
What are STIs?
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs): are infections that spread primarily through sexual contact. They can be caused by bacteria, viruses, or parasites and include common infections like Chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, HIV, and herpes. It's important to note that STIs can affect anyone, regardless of age, gender, or sexual orientation.
-
The symptoms of sexually transmitted infections vary from person to person and many people will notice no symptoms at all. If you don’t have symptoms, the STI can still cause you health problems and you can pass it on to others.
Unusual discharge from the penis, vagina or anus
Pain during sex or urination
Sores, blisters, ulcers, warts or rashes in the genital area
Itchiness or irritation usually localised to the urethra
Abnormal or unusual vaginal bleeding, especially after having sex
Pain in the scrotum or testicles
Lumps and bumps on the genitals
Swelling of the glands in your groin
Due to the fact that many people will notice no symptoms at all, the only way to truly know you have an STI is through testing.
-
Why should I get tested?
There are many reasons to get tested for an STI and each person has their own reasons, including: –
Having symptoms that could be associated with an STI
Starting a new relationship and want to make sure you’re all clear before having unprotected sex
Routine testing to maintain good sexual health
Having unprotected sex with someone for the first time or who you do not know
If a previous sexual partner has let you know they have an STI
STI testing for work or visa requirements
STI testing before beginning IVF or trying for a baby
If you’ve slept with a sex worker or you are a sex worker yourself
Where and when can I get tested?
Dual HIV and syphilis testing and other Sexually Transmitted Infection (STIs) are available 5 days a week, Monday to Friday, 9:00 am – 5.00 pm on our routine outreach sites. You can also make an appointment by emailing us or calling.

Your Sexual Health is a 100% confidential service, with the only people aware of your test being you, the laboratory. Our health workers have no access to your results at all. Your results are sent to you on the mobile number you have given when you test.
Should you need to receive treatment for an STI you can get from the Healthy Living local Pharmacies? For gonorrhoea and syphilis may have to visit a sexual health clinic. We will always request your permission before doing so.
We keep no record of your results once you’ve been tested and they will not be added to your NHS medical records. The laboratory deletes your details following a period of time where they will no longer reasonably need them to complete the service.
How long will it take to get my result?
This ranges from a few minutes for HIV and a few days for other STIs. Specifically, 10 minutes for HIV and 3-5 days for other STIs. The laboratory ensures that there are no unnecessary delays for you to obtain your results.
Do I have to pay?
No, all our services are completely free and confidential.
Will the laboratory tell my Doctor?
No. The laboratory service is completely confidential between Your Sexual Health, the laboratory and yourself.
Will the test result go on my NHS record?
No. If you require the results to be on your NHS record you can communicate them with your GP, but the laboratory will not pass them on to anyone without your permission.
